Christmas Week

Our week was full of walking around because everyone's on vacation. But I believe that we saw some good miracles this week. First talking to my family on Christmas Day was amazing. Other miracles that we saw this week are: we were working in a town and we found a Dominican family.  They said that we can come by so we are excited for that. Second, we were walking in the middle of the street and a lady was smiling at us. We thought, we might as well contact her. Ends up that she had missionaries over before-hand and she gave us directions and her number. It's a family contact so we are pumped to go over and visit them.
This Christmas was a little bit hard for some people here. In my last area, one of the members suffered a heart attack of some sort and he has passed away. I was extremely sad but I know for a fact that he was a good member, is a loyal member, has been sealed to his family and I know for a fact that he will be able to be with family again. I know that our families can be eternal forever as long as we obey the commandments that God has given us. I know that for a fact.
I love you.

Good Christmas week!

This week was extremely interesting. We found some new people to teach and have some more people possibly and then near future so we are excited for that. I do not remember much that happened but I will try to.
Funny story of the week. In  my last area, my old companion convinced on of the newer missionaries in the field that it is a tradition to make brownies that have hot dogs inside of it. This missionary believed him and he made wiener brownies. I did not believe him and he sent me the video; I was crying when I was done watching it! So if I come back and I make wiener brownies, you know why.
We had the Christmas party was in the branch this last Saturday and there are a lot of Manon members there. And the members seem to enjoy it but we were super tired especially when they started to do songs like Bailando and others. In terms of our investigators they are still sick and we hope to finally get in contact with him again this week but if not we have some others to teach now. Not much else happened and I definitely wish you all a merry Christmas.
Love Èlder Broadbent.

Everyone's sick, but blessings are still here!

Funny story for the week: we went to a pueblo of one of our members and we got lost. And when we got there the member he was not there. So, we had to wait for him to get back so we can enter inside his house. And that was an hour later. And we were in there for the space of two hours because he loves to talk. And when we left it was nighttime and it was foggy. We had to walk in the darkness for 5 km. that is a lot! We could only see maybe 10 feet in front of us. And my companion was making; sounds like a lobo (wolf)! But we returned and we're safe now and we're happy!

This week to begin with all of our investigators have been sick. A fever is gone through the entire town of Ponferrada end it has infected everyone yeah! But because of that we've been able to see blessings. Literally we gave to blessings in one day to one of our current investigator families. Our branch president was present and it was extremely spiritual.

I am grateful that we have the restored gospel on the earth today with the holy priesthood ordinances of blessings. I am also grateful that we have the priesthood to perform them also. I know that Faith can move mountains, change souls, and save many lives. I also know they can save little things with in our lives even if it is a sickness.

I love you all. And hope you’re doing the Christmas initiative.

Ups and Downs

So, this week was a roller coaster. We had to go into Leon two times this week: first time for district meeting (oh and I forgot to tell you guys that I am the new district leader here) the second time was for a baptismal interview. His name is Khalifa and he will be baptized this upcoming 30th of January. He is from Africa from Mali and he said some pretty funny stuff during the interview. He didn't speak Spanish so we had to do a form of French and Spanish and his native tongue. I will remember that interview for the rest of my life.

So far as the week goes we saw many miracles this week. We were able to meet with our investigators and they are progressing pretty well now. Still having problems coming to church but we have hope with one of them in particular. His name is Nacho. He wants to come to church and we'll give him a tour of the church tomorrow. As far as the ward members, they are doing good with our new Christmas Initiative. Have you guys seen the new Christmas video? If not I recommend it. And to follow the "25 Days, 25 Ways".

This last Sunday was a little hectic. We taught the word of wisdom to one of our investigators that wants to quit smoking with our branch president so that's a really good thumbs up. Then after we went to go visit a member. But we ran into something different and a little frightening. The member’s dad had major health problems at that moment and she was not able to meet with us. So, if you could keep her in your prayers that would be awesome. Her name is Rosanna.

That’s our week I love you.

It was a literal sick week!

Ponferrada
So, this week was an interesting week. Well the beginning of this week I received my new companion Elder Baerwaldt and with that our adventures begin. We were able to teach some new people new things. Two of these people are friends of ours whose names are Nacho and Denny. We have high hopes for them. We also have hope to find more people this week. But the biggest part of the week itself was I was extremely sick. I was sick after this Wednesday with huge stomach pains and headaches. So, in this last Saturday we were in the Piso all day basically and that was probably not the funnest part of my mission. But at least something good out of it. I learned that we need to have patience. Because at times we want to work but we've get put into situations that we did not like. We just need to have a good smile, try to at least and we will eventually come out of it. And it's also important that we pray for strength that we might be able to be well enough to do a little work. And that day we actually had three lessons. That's amazing!
I love you guys and I wish you the best of luck in your lives.

Intercambiamos!

Well winter has come here in Spain and it's mild compared to the ones we have home. On the bright side, the mountains in Leon have snow capped on top now so that's good to see. The members say it never snows in Ponferrada so I won't be seeing a white Christmas again. Even though this isn't that cold, I'm freezing! I feel as if I'll be a wimp to the cold when I come back home. My new companion might be freezing too. He's from California and has been on the mission about a year.
My new companion, Elder Bearwaldt

The six weeks with Èlder O'Boyle have been a needed six weeks. I'll miss him talking about how the south shall rise again and on how much he is anti-Hillary Clinton. Yeah, we know what happened in the elections. The people here in Spain keep telling us. We dropped saying we're Americans and just saying we're Canadians now. But onto the week.

I feel ready to use the Book of Mormon in different ways than I did before. This whole week we've been placing more focus on the reading and praying about the Book of Mormon. We've been doing follow up calls to our investigators here about their reading in the Book of Mormon. At the beginning no one could say they've been putting the time in the actual reading of the book. ☹️. We then committed them to read it again and the next time we asked them if they did and they did. Because of this, our father decided to shower us with blessings. We are now teaching four new people this week and they are extremely interested in the message. So I ask you to pray for these people if you could.

Well I love you all and wish the best for you.

Con amor

The week we had was amazing!

The week we had was amazing! We found a new person to teach. His name is Nacho. Yes like cheese. He is super interested in what we have to teach and he has a lot of free time on his hands! So, we might be expecting a baptism soon. Other than that, we were able to pass out nine books of Mormon in the space of four days which is amazing for this area. Although We did have our downsides. We needed to drop three people this week. They were not keeping with the appointments we set and we confirmed with them the day before hand. It´s not their time now, the future missionaries will see them again and hopefully they´ll be prepared by then.

We had an experience this week also that I would like to share. This last Wednesday we had a meeting in Leon with other missionaries. Afterward I was a little down because we didn´t have as many people to teach anymore. Here in Spain it is hard to find new people to teach especially in the winter months. So, we got onto the bus and my companion sat in one seat and me in another. I felt I needed to say a prayer. So, I did a personal asking for a way to get out of this bajón I was in. I looked up and saw Elder O´Boyle talking to someone. I thought I need to talk to someone also so I started talking to the guy next to me. he was awesome to have a conversation with. We talked about our families because he was visiting here and had his family back home.

Afterwards I still had the same problems but I know that we can be happy even when have a load to carry. It´s essential in this life to carry burdens in order experience what true happiness is.

Love, Elder Broadbent.

Hopeful

Well to begin with the week we had, it was wet. It rained maybe three days of the week during proselyting time. Missy can tell you how awesome that is. Once again, this week was hard but we received a huge boost of hope last Saturday. We were contacting in the streets last week and found this one lady from Brazil. She had many questions on what is the purpose of this life and how can we live in a world that bad things happen to good people. Well we read 2 Nephi 2:11 with her and we she wanted the Book of Mormon. We gave it to her and set up a return appointment with her last Saturday.
Well, Saturday came and we called her to confirm the meeting. She answered and told us that she would call us back. This term, “I´ll call you back,” means that, please don’t bug me but I’m too nice to say I don’t want anything. We gave up hope on her so we continued our day about an hour later we get a call, and it was her! She did call back! We met with her in a park and she accepted to be baptized when she comes to know these things are true. We have another day set to meet with her and we're just stoked to teach her again.
Moral of the Story: Never think that God doesn’t answer your prayers. He will answer them. Just place yourself in line to receive that shower of blessings he desires for you to have. I know that many of these answers come through others and through your thoughts and actions.
I love you,
Elder Broadbent.

Long but fruitful week here in Spain.

How to begin the week we had. Well we were only in our area for four days of the week because of zone conference. it was great. I sent a picture of a hike we did up the el Jesús in Oviedo. it was beautiful and it´s something that we´ll come and visit when I come back for visits. I will say the hike itself was hard, at one point we were going up what seemed to be a 40º slope in the pouring rain. Yes, I did slip a couple of times but Élder O´Boyle was there to laugh at me, so that made me feel better. On the hike I felt the scripture Heleman 5:12 come to me because there was so much rain and wind when we went up. I wanted to give in because I couldn´t see anything and I was soaking wet. But there was a clearing in the tree line for a moment and I saw that my destination wasn´t that far. We cannot see the future path may hold but if we have our desires set on Christ we don´t need to see it. He´ll make our path lighter and fruitful so long as we follow him.

I Love you.

Helaman 5:12
And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

New Adventure

Well I'm leaving Ourense now. I'm going to be in a city on the opposite side of Galicia. It's named Ponferrada and my new companion is Èlder O'Boyle. I'm writing this on the train heading into Lèon. The last of Ourense was a hard battle but we won major victories this last six months. We finally were able to bring an investigator to church for the first time in eight months here in this branch. Her name is Mari and fell in love with Èlder Eyrings talk on Sunday morning. She has a baptismal date set for the 29 of October so I ask to continue praying that she'll receive an answer by then.

Ponferrada is the been the smallest area in terms of active members. It's also the smallest town I've been in with maybe 60,000 people. Elder O'Boyle from a ward in Greenville South Carolina but his parents are from New Jersey. He's been on the mission for 16 months now.

This week we as a branch made desserts from our perspective countries. Well we made a lemon pie. Not sure if that's American or not. But interesting first week. We passed out six Books of Mormon and gained a new person to teach already. I've also been very sick for the last two days. Yeah it blows. I love you all.

Willingness of heart.

Well this was a tiring week. We were sick the last Wednesday all the way to today. Why were we sick? Because our district leader came over and gave us the flu. We're up and running now but we have a horrible cough now and the members always ask us, "¡Estáis bien, tenéis que tomar limón con miel!" Other than that we had something huge happen.

We stormed another castle!
A member that has not come to church in over three years is coming and listening to us again. He came yesterday to church and we were able to visit him last night. He desires to have the gospel in his life again and that his family will follow to. So I ask you if you could keep him in your prayers. His name is Fran and the family's name is Montes.

Oh it is true that the mission is difficult but us missionaries need to get use to it. A member once told me that a mission call never ends. Because when it does end we do not have the spirit. I definitely believe that's true. Life after the mission is going to be harder. Here we have the perfect schedule and the least amount of distractions possible too. But when we came back all those filters, schedules, and constant hard work goes aways. So after we need to strive even harder because life is harder after the mission. So I'm not afraid of disappointment here now. I'm lying if I'm fearless of what may happen after but we have the promise in DC64:30-34. Willingness to continue in good works is what the lord requires us to do to keep the spirit.

I love you all and wish that you may continue in good works.

Mosiah 24

So we had it hard this week. Not many wanted to talk to us this week. Well the last three weeks in general were difficult in terms of finding people to teach. But the greatest thing is the lord blesses us in the hard times. That's where Mosiah 24 comes into our lives. Even though we continue to do good and follow the commandments we are at times shut down, discouraged, mocked, and at times hated by others. I can't describe how frustrating it is when you complete with what you've been asked and there's no recompense. That's when returning to the scriptures and kneeling down in humble prayer makes it all worth the while. With this humility and knowledge that it is better to obey a command rather than wither away by outside forces. Like Nephi, I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.

As a mission we've been given a commandment to contact 25 people a day. Sounds simple but very hard when you go days without a single conversation or at times very rude actions by others. We were able to find two people within the space of two weeks that want to hear us. One(Mari) has a baptismal date set in October and the other(Ines) is reading the Book of Mormon every day now.

I know that when we follow through with the ways of the Lord no matter how much time it takes we'll end up with less afflictions than we had beforehand. I love you and wish you the best week possible.

Love Èlder Broadbent.

Dios desee que nosotros veamos quién podemos llegar a ser.

We have seen a miracle within this area. Well I will always say that the week we had was a miracle but this week even more. The branch will put on an activity this Friday and we've invited many of the people we're teaching now to come and enjoy. We see the possibility of seeing 12 people coming and even more. So we desire to see them come and enjoy what we have to give. I've seen and felt this is how God feels in our personal lives. He wants to witness the joy that comes when we partake the blessings of his gospel.
This week I've noticed how we fail to see the difference between who we are and who God desires us to become. How many times have we lived feeling that we cannot reach the potential that we desire? How many times have we set goals and in the end not reach them? The agony that comes with failure is never too much for God’s grace. So make goals to reach the potential that God desires you to be.
I know that the sacrifice that was made through Jesus Christ is real. It's the only way to feel the true happiness that God desires us to have. God wants us to see who we can become.
I love you all.

Miracles and dangers.

Well this week we had miracles and dangers.

FIRST MIRACLE. We're teaching this lady(Elena) from Brazil who
was taking lessons over a year ago. As we start a lady walk into her
store and listened to us talk. When we finished we gave Elena a Book
of Mormon in Portuguese and the lady looked at my backpack and asked if there was one in there for her too. Soon after we found out she was an inactive member who was baptized in Brazil over 37 years ago. We are going to visit her this upcoming week and her family too. Her name is Gissely
SECOND MIRACLE. I'm staying here in Ourense six more weeks with
Èlder Jones.
THIRD MIRACLE. The temperature is lowering.
FOURTH MIRACLE. A less active family we are teaching is reactivating.
FIFTH MIRACLE. I cooked for this family and no one is dead.

The DANGER of the week was that we went into an area to check on a
reference we received. When we arrived we both felt we needed to
leave. So we passed by this person, it ended up being fake, and we
continued. We called the branch president here to confirm a family
home evening and we told him where we were at. He then said to leave right away. We did the obvious thing, we asked, "Why?" He then
proceeded to say that was a drug and trafficking zone. We were out of there like a home run hit by Babe Ruth.

So whenever you get a prompting to leave or not to say anything,
Listen and don't linger; unless you want to lose the right to those
promptings.

I love you all.
Elder Broadbent

Monday, August 15, 2016

This week was a humbling experience.

So to begin, in the weeks beforehand we've been seeing many people wanting to listen to us. This week was the same. We found others to teach and had two who said that they would come to church. We got everything ready for them to come, but they never came. I'm not going to lie; I was a little upset when this happened. Then after that all of our plans fell through, my companion and I went to the streets and came back home with no fish. I wasn't the happiest person last night. I felt I had worked so hard this day and saw nothing.
We then received a call from our district leader to talk about how the week went. I told him that all was good for the week but Sunday was rough. He said that all will be better this week and that was it. I then remembered that there was another companionship of missionaries that had a hard week this week with one of their investigators. So I called them up and asked how is their investigator doing. I was expecting that she was doing worse or stayed the same. But they said that she has a baptismal date for this upcoming week! It came as a surprise to me that things went well for them, but I was extremely happy for them and their success!
At times we view the success of others as a hindrance to ourselves. We're jealous of what they have and what we don't have. There is no growth if we view it in the way of the adversary. In fact, it corrodes our foundation. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ, we should rejoice for the success of our siblings. Our faith in the plan of happiness will grow, the need of humility will increase and the love for our own callings also. I leave you that the Savior is here with us and we need him every hour.

Love,
Èlder Broadbent

Amazing

In short this week was amazing. We ran into a inactive member this week and were able to set something up with him this last Thursday. His name Wladimir and he's had it rough for the last three years. He knows that the church is true and knows he needs to repent. It won't be easy but he wants to come back. We hope he can because he was part of the branch in the beginning times and he's a return missionary.

This time here has taught me that the atonement is essential for our happiness. I feel such a peace when I ask my companion what I can do better.  I had a companion that asked me one time, what I thought I could do better. Now that's when you begin to think of what you really are doing. So I want to leave you with this question, what can I do better?

I promise you that you'll see a change in your prayers and how you view the atonement in your lives. I love you,

Èlder Broadbent

AREPAS

This week we made arepas and we were in the piso for a whole day. Yeah! I was sick one of the days this week but the work continues even when we're sick. Our branch president has given us the chance to teach two families he's been speaking with. We'll find more info in this upcoming two weeks😊.

I find even when we feel we are being torn down by outside forces we are always being built up by someone who cares for us. I've noticed this throughout this short period of time here in Spain. I know that a loving father is in heaven. That he only rebuilds with a better design in mind. We just need to give him the right materials and right amount of time.

Love
Èlder Broadbent.

AREPAS

Two cups of white corn flour.

Two cups of water or milk.

Two tablespoons of salt, and sugar.

Three tablespoons of olive oil.

Este carta es muy guay, Os amo muchísimo

Well we had transfers and Èlder Liptrott left to serve in Madrid and I've gained Èlder Jones. Elder Jones is from Arizona and has only 5 months on the mission. But he speaks the language very well because his mom is actually from Spain. We've been working hard since day one and found someone to teach and he seems ready to hear the gospel  and our branch president has two families for us to teach in the coming weeks. I love being a missionary and I love teaching about how we can live with an eternal peace in this world we live in.

I'm not going to lie I've been sick for the last three days with a bad crooping cough. But luckily we have a member family who we've designated as the mom and dad of the missionaries here in Ourense. The mom heard me coughing one day and bought me medicine the next day. So, no need to worry about me getting sick with this family here. This simple act made me love this family more than I already did. When we do things out of love we'll see the charity that Moroni and Paul teach us. So I want you this week to act on prompting that you'll receive this week to show a simple act of love.

The city of Ourense is now in full swing with festival now. Absolutely
no one in the street and not a single store is open. The only things
open here are bars and smoke shops, But we enjoy it still.

I was thinking of a talk that I've read this week. It is Broken Vessel, by Èlder Holland. This talk hit me and told me that in moments of difficulty there is always a way to happiness still.

My District

I love you.

Historias buenas y una historia demasiada Buena

We were with a member family this Saturday eating lunch with them. We then proceeded to have a lesson afterwards about faith is what drives us to keep the commandments. We asked them, “Why does God give us commandments?” Maria the mom then answered. “He gives us commandments to strengthen the desire to gain faith,” which was a very good thought, then she went into using the faith of others.  As she continued talking she went into worthiness, still good a very good thought. She then went on about priesthood blessings, wow she's very good at summarizing and adding more. (Google translate) "When I ask for a blessing of the priesthood, always I ask a missionary makes it. Because you are more pure than married men. "You are fulfilling all the commandments of the Lord while those men not meet them commandments."  Her husband then said, "¡Gracias!"

This week we've seen many blessings. While we were walking down the street we saw a member that hasn't been at church for a long time. We talked and then we went to a cafe to have a coke with her. When we got there she saw one of her friends who wanted to talk with us. Her name is Vivian and we have another time set up to see her. As we were leaving this cafe one of the families we're teaching came in and said they have some friends that want to hear us also. We met this family last Friday and they are prepared to listen to the restored gospel. Their names are Paco, Cristina, and their fat six month daughter Cristina.

But this week was amazing and I have nothing else to say but I know that the spirit of God is here with us. I love these people so much and I don't want to leave. But wherever we are God will bless us with the happiness that comes according to our faith in him.

Con amor,

Élder Broadbent.

Spain is so hot!

(This is from email on June 13)

Father's Day here in Spain is one of the biggest events in Europe. Everyone is watching soccer and that's it. We've ran into bars and pubs that have been packed to the opposite side of the road. And my companion is just insane right now. Some how he's been receiving what the scores are, who's playing, and who's in the finals. He said it's so we know what to say to the people on the street. So I'm in this moment where he can speak more Spanish than I can which is really good for him.

This week we've hit a dry spell, both physically and emotionally. This week we hit record temperatures here in Ourense. It's been 47 degrees Celsius (that's 116 degrees in American) here for the last two days. And because of that not many people are out in the streets now. And the beginning of this week Èlder Liptrott sprained his ankle playing soccer. So we've taking things slowly for the week. He has crutches now but that's it. The adventures of being a missionary here in Ourense.

We've had to drop a person we were teaching this week because he refused to pray for help with his questions. It broke both our hearts to decide that but we will find someone to teach once again. I love this life here and even though I'm coming home in 8 months. And look forward to seeing you all. I honestly feel that this has been the best decision of my life to this point.

I love you
Èlder Broadbent.

I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.

We've been receiving miracles from our father in heaven. We've gained a huge amount of branch support now and we're gaining different ways to teach also. We started teaching more object lessons, we saw the members begin to open up more with their feelings and thoughts. We've not received many people to teach but the Rama here in Ourense is being strengthened. And another miracle is we were walking down the street and someone pulled up on the side of us. We both thought it was someone to yell and cuss at us but that wasn't the case this time. It was someone that the missionaries from 2004 were teaching. Him and his family lost contact with the missionaries due to a sudden change of work and they left for Romania. We have his info again and we're going to set something this week to come.
Other than seeing miracles we've seen the temperature rise and rise. We've had three days in the upper 90s now. It's been hard but who cares. The weather doesn't effect me anymore. We can always control the weather that is in our heads and weather we are doing right or not. We decide who we are and where we are in this life. The life to come is based on our hearts in this life. So we are the masters of our fate. We are the captains of our souls.

¡Cocinando por muchos personas ahora!

¡Hola chavales!

A lot happened this week that was pretty funny. Me and Èlder Liptrott were talking to people on the street and some things happened. Èlder Liptrott said hello to an older lady and she pinched his butt as we passed by her. It was super funny. We also did the Cinnamon Challenge. Don't have a video of it but it was pretty good. This week not much passed in terms of our area besides that Èlder Liptrott was sick on Thursday. During that time I made some awesome Spanish Rice. I'll make it again and send a video to you guys. I'm making food for some of the members this week to come eat with us because Èlder Liptrott says I cook pretty good. That's all I got today.

A scripture I've been focused on this week has been Mosiah 3:19: "For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."

I love this scripture and we can fully understand the meaning behind it it'll make repentance much easier for us.

I love you guys.

Rain shower of blessings.

New Haircut
This week has been hectic. No it was pretty tranquil. We've had transfers and not much happened. Me and Èlder Liptrott are staying here in Ourense for another one and we're both happy with that. This week we also received a ton of rain. To the point where there was one road had maybe 5 inches of water on it. Other than the weather we've been receiving more people to teach now. We've been working with a menos activo family here for a while now and he gave us info on his brother. His brother is menos activo also but we met with him and we see much potential in him. Him and his family of two daughters recently moved from Venezuela about two months ago. He's member but his wife and two daughters aren't. So we have a family to teach now!
Love you

Una semana muy liada

Fuimos por la playa

This was longer week because we adjusted to the travel we had in Madrid. We had interviews with President Pack this week about the meeting we had with Elder David A. Bednar. He asked me, “What was the main thing that stood out to you?”

I told him that the way Elder Bednar was talking to us. It was an open conversation. I felt it was easier to talk and not be as nervous. I feel if we can talk and teach in that same way that God has made for us to talk and teach, we would find that we are on the same level.
This week we got awesome news! We found this family while visiting a less active and they took interest in what we were saying! So we're going to be visiting the family this week to teach the two daughters English! That's the week we had and next week will be transfers so we'll see what happens next.

Love you so much.
